Fall Cake Flavors

We got our first big snow here in Boulder. It's very white and very pretty and very cold. While it may seem that we have moved from Fall onto Winter, we are still offering our yummy fall cake flavors. My favorite is pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese frosting and toasted pecans or maybe my favorite is ginger molasses cake with cream cheese frosting. Hmmmmm. Jake also made a "plain" spice cake for our friends over at McGinty today.

I don't have any cake pictures to share today but here are some pics of Jake digging our car out of the snow!

Jake's Car

Jake and I got an order from a friend for a birthday cake for her son and her father. "They like cars, red race cars" is what Jake took away from the conversation. Jake wanted me to make a bathtub Porsche cake. I had no idea what a bathtub Porsche is nor did I think I had enough time to carve a car cake. Well, Jake surprised me and made this cake all on his own. It was the first time he has ever worked with fondant or carved a cake. I think it came out great!

Oil and Vinegar Cakes!

Last night Jake brought some cakes to The Kitchen [Upstairs] for a late night taste test for the staff. They were well received, so look for them to be on our menu soon! The olive oil cake is drizzled with aged balsamic vinegar and iced with a salt and pepper cream cheese icing and the balsamic cake is baked with a reduced aged balsamic and topped with the salt and pepper cream cheese icing, yum.
As some of you may know, last week was the Great American Beer Fest in Denver. Wednesday night we had the annual beer dinner at The Kitchen[Upstairs]. Perhaps that is why we have beer on the mind! Also making it's debut last night was the Oskar Blues Old Chub Cake. More beer cakes on tap (ha, ha) for the Avery OctoberFest celebration. I'm not sure what beers they will be providing us for the cakes, but we'll be sure to spread the word as soon as we find out!
Cheers

Square cakes

August was the month for square wedding cakes. I have never had so many square cakes in one month! I try to keep track of trends in wedding cakes by visiting websites and reading the wedding magazines, but I was not aware of a square cake trend! Here are some pictures of a cake we did for a couple who got married at the Omni Interlocken hotel in Broomfield.

August Weddings

Here are some pictures of the wedding cake that we did for our friends Matt and Meredith in Ft. Collins. The reception was upstairs at the Rio, in the Agave room. This is also the first cake that Jake designed and decorated, Matt told Jake he wanted a modern square cake with pumpkin and wasabi squares. I think Jake did an awesome job!

Cupcakes!

Jake and I have had a very busy August. One to two weddings every weekend, not to mention a house full of visitors. Our first big event in September was 400 cupcakes for the 2009 Miracle Party (http://www.miracleparty.org/). The party raises money for children with cancer. This year's event had a superhero theme and Jake and I took that to heart. Here are some pictures that our friend, Chris Donato, took before the event.

We're still here!

Well, wedding season has started for us. We spent most of July doing tastings and booking weddings for August into the fall. We are officially booked for the month of August!
I don't have any pictures to post as of now, our camera is out of commission and I am trying to decide what kind to buy...I have some ideas, just need to stay in budget.
Stay tuned for info on our cupcake pops. We spent the day making some for a friend who is having a baby, as we speak!! I will post pictures and info soon.

Busy times ahead

Jake and I had a busy week with wedding cake tastings, soccer party cakes and a fire breathing dragon birthday cake. The soccer cakes was especially fun for me as the team mascot is a bulldog. I went all out Georgia style!

We also had alot of fun with the dragon cake, last year I made SpongeBob for this same little boy. I am looking forward to what they have in store for me next year!

Baby Shower Cake

This past Sunday we made a super cute cake for a baby shower. I have to admit, I have not worked with much fondant since we have moved to Colorado from Georgia. I was not sure how the fondant would react to such dry weather. And to be honest, the first go round was a bit of a disaster. Now I have to admit, I love to procrastinate-actually I call it my artistic thinking time. I need time to think and plan and think and plan the cake; colors, size, shapes. And them Bam! I have an idea. Luckily with this cake, I knew going it was it was going to look like. So I started on Saturday with the plan of covering the cake and doing all the detail work on Sunday morning before the shower. I was very proud of myself for having this cake covered and ready to go by the end of the day on Saturday, little did I know that my fondant was cracking like crazy. Oops, a little too much cornstarch. That meant Sunday morning I was up at the crack of dawn to recolor and recover the cake. But, I am happy with the finished product and more importantly-the mom to be was thrilled!

Now we have a dragon cake for Saturday. I am ready to forgive fondant for cracking on me last weekend, but I will not be so forgiving if it happens again!
